What happens after we print the masks? |
The whole team working across Adams 12 (Northglenn STEM, Bollman Tech, STEM Launch, STEM Lab, Rocky Top, and Hulstrom) has created over 1300 masks so far. As we print them, we bring them to the door of the Northglenn STEM building and they bring it over to Lutheran Medical/SCL Health. We have halted production for now until there is a bigger need.
The situation has been ever evolving with adjustments being made the entire time. The 3D design has changed as well as the finishing touches to make the masks as safe as possible. The steps, outlined in the videos from the previous page are: 1. Print 2. Sand 3. Attach window seal as gasket 4. Caulk the edges using silicone 5. Attach elastic (if you can find it!) 6. Place a filter in the center 7. Ship it out to nurses, doctors, and essential employees See the more detailed steps below for more information. |
SANDINGUsing a 220 grit sandpaper, we sand the edges of the mask that will have direct contact with the face for a more comfortable fit.
|
Install a gasketWe are using Window Weather stripping to create a flexible seal that is attached to the edge of the mask so that you can form a better seal when wearing the mask. The stripping is self-adhesive, but it takes some clips and a steady hand to get the shape just right. We then super glue the seam at the bottom of the mask.
|
Caulk the edge of the gasketUse a caulk such as silicone or a rubber dip to seal the space between the gasket and the mask itself. We put a bead on the outside and the inside to ensure that there is not air that can come through the gaps.
|
ELASTIC StrapsWe had some elastic bands around the house that we were able to repurpose for our masks. We slide them through the holes that are preprinted, double knot and test the fit. It's hard to find elastic nowadays though, so we have asked the people that we send to to find their own.

Put the Filter in the CenterYou can now make a medical mask last 6 times longer by cutting small 2.5x2.5 pieces to go in the center of the mask. '
If you don't have medical masks, you can use coffee filters to help protect yourself as well. |
Send them out!We are currently sending masks to nurses we know around the country as a back up just in case. We have also included some 3D printed mask strap hooks designed by a 12 year old!
We are also working with the Postal Service and Thornton PD to create masks for those on the front lines too! |
